About Us

Well, what can we say About Us?  We love dogs!!  They are not just dogs, but furry little people that deserve the best treatment possible.  We started Scrubby Puppy in January 2004, because Val (the owner) wanted to have a job where she could take her dogs with her to work.  So a self-service pet wash was the answer!  Then came the salon-style grooming, and boutique!!  We love our business and love all of our customers who come in and have become a part of our extended family!

When we started Scrubby Puppy, we had just two dogs—Bear and Basie.  But then came a puppy mill bust, and an emergency foster situation—and we added three more, so we can now confidently say we have a herd.  Maia, Sophie and Eugene have added their own wonderful personalities to the mix and there’s never a dull moment here at the shop.

Meet the crew:

Val

owner, manager, janitor, herdwalker, part-time groomer, Sophie-holder, bill payer, telemarketer hanger-upper….her dogs are her life!!!   She loves everyone who comes in to wash.  Always here to help, assist, answer questions...if she doesn't know the answer, she'll find out!

Tony

Val’s husband, part-time Scrubby manager, full-time holder of Eugene.  Tony actually will be coming over full time at the beginning of the year as he will be closing or selling his photo lab of 22 years.   He likes to play music and golf in his spare (ha!) time. Did I mention he loves his boy (and his boy loves him)?

Yvonne

Yvonne is our full time groomer.   She's been with Scrubby since September 2009 and has been grooming for over 3 years.  She loves dogs and grooming and shares Val's vision of every dog rescued and loved.   We are so happy to have Yvonne--she's a wonderful addition to our family.

Derek

Pic to follow...

Derek keeps the shop running smoothly and cleanly.  He's been at Scrubby for almost a year and one day Val hopes to adopt him.  No, he's not an orphan...just loved!  He's Basie's buddy and holds the shop vac while Maia attacks it.  He's a terrific young man and we hope he's at Scrubby for a long, long time.

And now, the herd!

Bear – Bear is Val’s first rescue dog.  They’ve been together for over 12 years, and she’s probably around 17 years old.  She’s a chow/border collie mix…has never hurt a fly, and sleeps about 22 ½ hours in the day.  She’s very special to Val and if you want to know her story, email Val and we’ll send you the story of Bear.

We had to say goodbye to Bear on Dec. 17, 2008.  She will always live in our hearts and memories.  Thank you to all who loved her like she was part of their family too!  She is free from her old creaky body now and waits for us to join her at Rainbow Bridge.

Basie – aka nutball, crazy munchkin, monkey-face—she really is our resident nut!!  Basie was part of an abandoned litter that was turned into IVHSSPCA.  They were about a week old, and there was nothing to do but to put them down, due to the amount of care they would need.  In the nick of time, however, students in the veterinary technician program at Mt. San Antonio College offered to split up the litter and bottle feed them until they were 8 weeks old.  Val started classes the following semester and adopted Basie.  She is Scrubby Puppy’s supervisor and receptionist.  Her greetings are loud, but friendly.  We are worried about her addiction---she loves cookies.  Every day is an intervention—the sign on the cookie jar, “Please don’t feed the Basie”, helps.  But she relapses every day.  *sigh*

Birthday:  Thanksgiving (wherever it may fall)

Likes:  Greeting everyone entering Scrubby as loud as she can

Dislikes:  ear cleaning

Favorite Band:  Primus

Maia – She’s our little Mama Maia, and we love her soooo much!!  She came from a horrible puppy mill home.  She lived with 45 other dogs in unspeakable filth.  She came to us needing an emergency foster home for her and her litter of 3 pups, Emma, Satchel, and Sophie.  How could we say no??  Of course, we took her and her little family in—her pups were barely 2 days old.  She was such a good little mama—so good that she adopted 2 more pups a week later, Eugene and Annie—their mom ran away from their foster home so they were in need of a nursing mom.  Maia was happy to nurse them and did a great job!  Maia was so scared of everything and everyone when we first had her, but almost five years later, she’s so happy and loves to talk.  “Arroooo rooo roooo!!!”

Birthday: We have no idea, but homecoming day is Feb. 27

Likes:  Playing with Sophie Princess

Dislikes:  nothing really...she's a happy Mama!

Favorite Food:  a Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr.

Sophie – Sophie was Maia’s little runt puppy, but instead of casting her away like some moms will do with their runts, Maia was very concerned and extremely attentive to her sickly little baby.  The first week, every time Val peeked into her nest to check on them, Maia was either licking little Sophie or moving her.  Val, Tony & friends did bottle feed her to supplement Mom’s milk, but Maia did most of the work.  Sophie became quite healthy and attached to Maia.  There was no way to let her go.  So now there is Sophie Princess, spoiled rotten, but so completely adorable.  Yes, she has a “little” attitude, and not very smart, but she gets by on her looks.

Likes:  Herself

Dislikes:  lots of activity, she's a princess of leisure!

Favorite Place:  Wherever Momah Val is!

Eugene – And, last, but certainly not least, is our only boy Eugene.  He was kind of a bad puppy, which probably explains why he never got adopted at the adoption fairs, but he was definitely meant to be with us.  He loves his dad, Tony, and the two are inseparable on the weekends, when Tony comes to Scrubby.   He loves to sit on laps of whomever is waiting while their dog is groomed.  He’s a happy, loveable boy!!

Likes:  Laps and his Dad!

Dislikes:  Getting groomed

Favorite pasttime:  Doggie Fashion
